Michael skal på jordomrejse med sin familie på et sejlskib. Familiens episke eventyr udvikler sig dramatisk under en storm, og Michael og familiens hund Stella ender alene på en solbeskinnet øde ø i Stillehavet. Michael opdager hurtigt, at han ikke er alene på øen, men de øvrige beboere viser sig at være både mystiske, sære og helt forunderlige. Filmen er baseret på bogen af den prisvindende forfatter, Michael Morpurgo, og foregår kort efter Anden Verdenskrig. En meget spændende og smuk film om venskab, natur og familie.
